Remember that shaving cream commercial that asked the question, “Who wears short shorts?” It’s at least 25 years old (telling my age here). I remember it all too well and remember thinking to myself, NOT ME every. single. time. it would come on!! That was because I was so insecure about my legs. They are too skinny, they don’t have muscle, they are too long, and so on and so on. They certainly didn’t look like the ladies’ legs in the commercial who were wearing short shorts. I used to despise warm weather because in Alabama, where I grew up, springs and summers were so hot! Since I only wanted to wear garments at shin level or longer, I was miserable. My wardrobe basically consisted of jeans and capri pants. That was then. This is now! If that commercial were to come on now, I would proudly raise my hands and scream “I wear short (skirts)!” I probably wouldn’t raise my hands or scream out loud, but I would definitely be raising my hands and screaming on the inside. I am not quite sure what changed me, but I am so glad it did. So, this post is in celebration of me wearing something, that as a teen and young adult, I would’ve never imagined having the courage to wear.
I’m sure we all have similar stories and I hope that we’ve overcome them. Life’s too short. Don’t get me wrong, I see a lot of fashionable pieces out there that look great on others, but are not for me. The key is in making sure that it compliments your style AND body. We want to look good, but more importantly, we want to feel good. I wear shorts skirts, yes I do, but I have to ensure that they are the right length. This skirt was perfect in that in falls mid thigh, highlighting the best part of my legs without showing too much. While we never want to overdo, we also don’t want to underdo. The key is balance. That’s why I decided to pair the short skirt with a full-coverage blouse that is filled with feminine detail. Adding the red statement belt with pearl details and nude suede booties was icing on the cake–giving off elegance and edge at the same time!
Today’s look: frayed-hem mini skirt with a long-sleeve sheer ruffled shirt and a red statement belt with nude suede booties.
Skirt (Express); shirt (Express) belt (Gucci, great option here and here); shoes (Christian Louboutin, great option here); bag (Banana Republic)
