At 47, I get asked a lot about my skincare routine. What I use to maintain my skin’s firmness, texture and (dare I say) glow. It’s pretty simple. I’ve been using the same products, or iterations of the same products consistently (skincare lines tend to enhance their products every couple of years) for years now. I like finding what works and sticking to it. Although I am very willing to try other products, I won’t jump on the bandwagon of the most popular product or the ones that cost a ton of money. Don’t get me wrong, I’m willing to spend for my skin, it just has to be worth it. It just has to work.
Recently, I partnered with Perimeter Von Maur to share my four steps to great skin, that is the four skincare products that are tried and true and work for me. I won’t promise flawless skin, just beautifully hydrated, smoother skin. Let me start by saying I haven’t done any cosmetic enhancements (i.e. botox, fillers, etc.) to my face, but I do love a good Hydra Facial once a month. If that caught your attention, then please read on.
My first step each night after cleansing is toning my skin. Oh, and I never go to bed with makeup on, no matter how tired I am. I use Bobbi Brown’s Hydrating Face Tonic right after I wash my face. This tonic serves many purposes: 1. removes excess dirt, 2. balances skin pH levels, 3. minimizes pores, 4. prepares the skin for its routine by allowing the moisturizers, etc. to absorb better…there are so many reasons to use this tonic and another reason I like Bobbi Brown’s is the smell. It’s very clean and refreshing and my skin doesn’t feel dry afterward.
I use a cotton ball and wipe the toner in upward, half-circle motions. I only use it once a day (at night) especially in the winter because my skin can dry out very easily and I’m all about moisture for my skin.
The second step is a tightening cream. I can’t say enough about the brand StriVectin. Anything I’ve ever tried has worked for my skin. Like I said, I’ve used it for years, but the brand has updated the product with more enhancements, and it still works for me. I love the Tightening and Sculpting Face Cream because let’s face it, my skin doesn’t have the snapback it used to have in my 20s or 30s.
There are a lot of scientific words that go wit this product (Gravifill-CS Shaping Complex, Patented NIA-114) and I won’t pretend I know a lot about it. What I will say is that years ago, in my late 30s, my mom took a picture of me while sitting across from me at lunch. I noticed that the areas around my mouth and nose were starting to lose elasticity. It was the first time I was able to see a change in my face due to aging. Long story short, I did research and tried StriVectin. After a few weeks, I noticed plumpness in the areas and much smoother, tighter skin all over my face. I’ve stuck with the creams in that line ever since.
The third step is another moisturizer, StriVectin Concentrate for Wrinkles and Stretch Marks. I have to be honest, I’ve never used this moisturizer for stretch marks so I can’t speak on that, but what it does for the fine lines around my eyes is amazing.
It started out as a stretch mark cream but was shown to also help reduce fine lines and coarse wrinkles. If I happen to forget any of my moisturizers, this won’t be it. It’s up there with my toothbrush and deodorant. I don’t play with Concentrate. I use it twice a day: morning and night and I add a bit more in those wrinkle-prone areas during winter. This stuff absorbs so well, my skin is hydrated and the fine lines are drenched to oblivion. Well, I don’t know about oblivion, but they aren’t as noticeable. This is the one thing I can’t go without. PSA: StriVectin, do not and I repeat, do not stop making the Concentrate for Wrinkles and Stretch Marks, please!
My fourth step is yet another moisturizer (I LOVE TO MOISTURIZE) which I use under my make up. It’s La Mer’s Moisturizing Cool Gel Cream. La Mer has changed the formula a time or two. I love this one, wasn’t crazy about the previous one. I was fearful when they stopped making my favorite Moisturizing Lotion, and went through a few before finding this one. I love it!!
Made with their trademark Miracle Broth–healing elixir made of sea-sourced renewing energies–the cool gel gets my make-up application as close to flawless as it can get. I warm it between my fingers and apply all over my face. I literally have a glow without the heavy, oily feeling so many products offer.
Now La Mer products can get expensive and I’m careful not to be wasteful with it. The Cool Gel comes in different sizes and ranges from $90-$335, but I can’t think of any better way to invest in oneself than investing in one’s skin. So I’d say try it and if you like it, buy it. I tried it back in 2010 and can’t imagine using anything else as my make-up moisturizer.
So these are my go-tos for great skin and they are all available in-store or online at Von Maur. They are tried and true. I am not a dermatologist and don’t claim to be a beauty expert. I’ve just found great skin products that work for me and want to share with everyone who is interested in learning about or trying them.
